Kids Cafe Information
Kids Cafe is a national program of Feeding America that provides nutritious meals for children who may otherwise go to bed hungry. Harvest Hope Food Bank provides food for Kids Cafe while each site provides a safe nurturing afterschool program. Kids Cafe is an after-school program that offers tutoring, nutrition education, mentoring, and nutritious meals to children at risk of hunger. Kids who attend the Kids Cafe Sites must attend school where there is a 50% or higher free and reduced lunch rate.
The Backpack Program provides children at-risk of hunger with food to take home over the weekends and out-of-school times. Backpacks or other containers are stocked with nutritious, child-friendly, easy-to-prepare food. They are typically distributed on Fridays or the last day the children attend the site for the week.
SnackSack Program
SnackSacks is a program designed to meet the needs of hungry children in local elementary and middle schools. Harvest Hope Food Bank supplies participating schools with food and backpacks, and school personnel identified chronically hungry children. Prior to every weekend and holiday break, the SnackSack coordinator at each school send participating children home with a backpack filled with nutritious food. The food is child friendly (e.g. easy to open), non perishable, easily consumed and vitamin fortified. The children returned the backpacks each week to be refilled. Each school provides a program coordinator and storage area for pre-filled backpacks. Funding has to be secured before site a can be added.
