Food Lion and Kellogg's to Partner with Harvest Hope for Food Distribution to Kick Off Summers Without Hunger Campaign
June 7, 2023
While many children may be going on break for the summer, the same cannot be said about hunger.
According to No Kid Hungry, 1 in 8 children in the United States lives with hunger. Without access to daily meals through their schools, thousands of children across our footprint are forced to go hungry during the summer. In 2020, Food Lion Feeds introduced Summers Without Hunger to help food banks address childhood hunger during the summer when food insecurity increases. The Summers Without Hunger campaign, which runs through June 27, supports Feeding America, the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization, and the 33 local partner food banks throughout Food Lion's 10-state operating area. The food banks provide meals through backpack programs, school pantry programs and summer feeding sites.
To help kick off Food Lion Feeds' Summers Without Hunger campaign, which gives customers the opportunity to make a difference in their local communities, Food Lion is teaming up with Harvest Hope Food Bank and Kellogg's for a day of giving back.
"We're proud to be a long-term partner of Harvest Hope to support our shared mission of feeding families, children, seniors and veterans facing hunger," said Kevin Durkee, Manager, Food Lion Feeds, Food Lion. "Our neighbors count on us, and we are committed to doing everything we can to address food insecurity in our community. By working together, we are helping provide access to fresh and nutritious food."
Food Lion associates and Kellogg's team members will be on-site at the food bank to distribute nonperishable food items as well as a special donation of Kellogg's breakfast items. Representatives will also present Harvest Hope with a monetary donation after volunteering in the pantry.
"We're so thankful for the continued support we have from our friends at Food Lion," said Erinn Rowe, Harvest Hope CEO. "Partnerships between the food bank and our retail partners are vital in ensuring that our neighbors facing food insecurity receive access to the food they need to thrive."
